K.F.C is a massive fast food chain, with over 18,000 outlets. It is widely acknowledged that K.F.C is bad for us, but what exactly is it that makes it so unhealthy?
Although K.F.C does contain some herbs, such as oregano, basil and thyme, the percentage of these is a lot smaller than the unhealthy ingredients.
K.F.C’s chicken batter is mainly sugar, salt, flour, black pepper and Mono-sodium Glutamate. K.F.C's food also contains many other chemicals, including high-fructose corn syrup and Sodium Nitrate, both of which are thought to increase cancer risks.

Sodium Nitrate
NaNo3 is a preservative which is often used in processed meats. It can cause heart disease, by narrowing arteries and making them more likely to harden. Nitrates also interfere with the bodies ability to produce insulin, meaning they can increase a person's risk of developing diabetes. In addition, researchers at the University of Hawaii and Harvard University have found that sodium nitrate can increase a person's risk of developing Pancreatic cancer and Leukemia. However, there is another more harmful ingredient.
Mono-sodium Glutamate
MSG is a flavour enhancing chemical, which basically tricks people into thinking their food tastes nicer than it does. Chemically, it is made up of approximately 78 % free Glutamic acid, 21 % Sodium and up to 1% percent contaminants. MSG is an excitotoxin, meaning it overexcites brain cells to the point of damage or death. This can lead to learning disabilities, or the onset of Alzheimer's or Parkinson's disease.

Hormones
K.F.C inject their chickens with lots of antibiotics and hormones, to accelerate the growth. These hormones not only leave the chickens deformed and sick, but also make their way into the bodies of customers.
Bon appetit!
Widely acknowledged?? Any proof? Hopefully as you progress with the blog you will add appropriate links.
ReplyDeleteI don't quite understand what you mean. I'm just trying to say that most people know kfc is not a healthy food. I tidied my links up a bit, I will try to do more.
ReplyDeleteI think if you have some evidence clearly supporting a correlation between eating kfc and health problems then you will be able to make more of an argument, but I am sure that kind of research would be hard to come across. I agree more information would be good on foods such as these. Also specific problems with individual stores do not mean that the entire chain has issues, but it could go to show a pattern of disregard for customer safety.
ReplyDeleteThanks for your advice Peter. Your'e right with the first comment but I think it would be hard to come across research such as that. I will try and have a look.
ReplyDeleteAnd yes I realize all stores would be different, I'm sure some of them are safe. But I feel the fact that there is an entire website devoted to KFC's health risks is worrying. There does seem to be a habit among fast food chains of providing fast food instead of quality food.
there will always be alot of debate about the health risks of eating food such as this, most people know it as generally 'unhealthy' but actual evidence to show any links between diseases that may or may not be caused by it must be hard to come by. Most people will continue to eat food like this without a thought for what its doing to their bodies, however, the more evidence that finds its way to the surface will hopefully cause many more people to stop and think before they chow down.
